A continuation of Drawing I with emphasis on advanced visual and conceptual problem solving

including a practical survey of contemporary issues and practices in drawing.

By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

Understand and use experimental approaches to mark-making
Speak about relevant critical issues of contemporary drawing practice
Bring a host of drawing related tools and skill to bear on the task of visual problem-solving

Additionally, by completion of the Drawing I and II sequence, the student is considered to be equipped

with a solid foundational view of drawing theory and practice, a view that will be essential to junior and

senior level image-oriented projects in the various disciplines of the visual arts.

Project 2 - Baechler Drawing

Artist: Donald Baechler
Objective: Find someone who has little or no drawing training and ask them to draw something that you decide upon earlier. Use media of your choice. Add layers of intuitive drawing response as needed. Use white out if you want, use conte, graphite, collage, stamping, ink pen and wash, etc. Keep the images black and white, however. Work large if possible, tape sheets together as needed, or pull off a large piece of paper from the rolls available and work on that. Scrub in the images, use catalogue reference, splatter ink, use paper resists, etc.

Project 3 - Ornament

Objective: Come up with a noun word or phrase like “boot camp” or “light bulb,” or “lipstick.” Choose a typeface that contradicts the meaning of that term. Place the term in the center of a 22x28 sheet of poster paper and hand-render the typefaced word. Leave a white space (regular or irregular) around the phrase, and then create a “field” in which this term lives. Try to imagine some graphic or visual device that would contradict the term as well, or at least add something unexpected to the interpretation of that term.

Project 4 - Graffiti

Objective: Think about your own identity and the symbols with which you maintain and command your environment with that identity. How do you visually assert yourself in your world? This can be as small and insignificant as a single mark, a design like that of Prince, etc. Once you have this in mind, imbue it with visual power and place it in an urban context. Create a personal “tag” and present it in context.

Project 5 - Playing Cards

Objective: Create a front and a back for a standard playing card. Use the history of playing cards to inform the image you create. The drawing should be on an 22x28 sheet of poster paper. The back should be axially symetric. The front of the card should be a face card, you may choose which one you wish to use.

Project 6 - Visual Journal

Artist: Barry McGhee
Objective: Create an integrated set of at least thirty finished drawings of various sizes (larger than 5x7 and smaller than 16x20) linked together to create a “suite” of diaristic renderings meant to be presented as a whole. Explore visual culture. Use images you see on TV, in magazines, construction sites, morning vistas, portraits of relatives, portraits of enemies, things that grab your attention. This is to be a kind of stream of consciousness, experientially derived work. Open yourself to what you see around you, and let it mix with your own quirky, ideosyncratic view of reality to generate a unique work that presents a new vibrant vision of the contemporary world.

Project 7 - Visionary Architecture

Artists: Julie Mehretu & Paul Noble
Objective: Choose a building exterior and integrate an organicform directly into it. Create a drawing on 22x28 poster paper that unifies (or collides) the architecture and the organic form in a thought-provoking manner. Use whatever medium you wish, but make the drawing on 22x28 matboard, with or without color.

Project 9 - Conceptual Map

Objective: Choose one discipline (i.e., graphic design, dating, shopping, military service, etc.) from the disciplines you know and create an image-oriented map that symbolically represents the large features, the pathways between those features, and the unknown areas. Create also a legend for this map that includes symbols for the distance, pathways (rural roads or superhighways), large constructions, and wilderness areas. Research and use archaic mapmaking graphic conventions as a starting point for your finished product.
