A project-based survey of the various elements and principles of two-dimensional design with a section on the main principles of color theory. the course includes an introduction to graphic photo editing.

By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

Define and visually identify the main principles of 2-D design and the main elements of 2-D design
Work effectively in 2 dimensions using a variety of media
Critique the project work of peers and conduct self-critique using the principles and elements of 2-D design

Project 1 - Positive Negative Space

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to understand positive and negative space (or figure and ground) and how their interaction affects the overall success or failure of a composition. Working from a photograph, you will create two new images in black and white using ink. The first one will reproduce the composition of the photograph; the second one will be an entirely new composition built from the components of the first composition.

Project 2 - The Pixelated Selfie

Objective: Reproduce a grayscale photograph of yourself as a pixelated image.

Project 3 - Op Art

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to understand how colors interact and affect our perception of them by doing so. You will be producing an optical illusion using color.

Project 4 - Pattern/Texture

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to understand how pattern and texture work in a composition.

Project 5 - Movie Still

Objective: You will be creating a black and white “movie still.” Unlike a real movie still, yours exists outside of a film. It stands alone. However, it should still give us a sense that something has happened and that something is about to happen. It should tell a piece of a story and be part of a narrative.
